Leading an academic unit and building production AI products are usually two different jobs. Doing both is the argument.

Dr. Rohan Thompson is Dean of the School of Business and Technology at Huston-Tillotson University, Austin's oldest institution of higher education and a historically Black university.
He leads three accredited programs and, in parallel, designs and builds the AI products the school and its students actually need. Nine platforms so far, every one built personally, none of them with a background in software development. That detail matters. It shows what a domain expert can now build alone, and it shapes how he teaches.
His work sits where business, computer science, and mechanical engineering meet, the three disciplines under his school and three fields that AI is reorganizing at very different speeds. The products in the Lab come out of that intersection: institutional infrastructure, decision tooling, and student-facing systems that treat AI output as something to interrogate rather than accept.
He speaks at HBCU AI Con on building AI capacity inside minority-serving institutions, and runs Thompson Intelligence Group, through which he advises institutions and organizations on applied AI adoption.
